Since its emergence as a new branch of humanities in 1951, psycholinguistics is considered either as a subfield of linguistics or as a subfield of psychology. Such a dichotomy, according to J. Caron (1989:26), reveals an identity crisis. This article aims at clarifying the position of psycholinguistics in relation to the two mother disciplines (linguistics and psychology).\r\nGiven that linguistics studies language as a system, whereas psychology studies language as an aspect of human behaviour, the author demonstrates that the issues tackled by psycholinguistics cover both fields. Inspired by the work of D E Saussure (1916), he proposes a model of human verbal communication that reconciles the study of language both as a system and as an aspect of human behaviour.
